Nessler-rør bruges til sammenligning af farve og turbiditet mellem opløsninger. De fås i høje eller lave udgaver, og rørene anvendes ofte til at fremstille en række kalibreringsopløsninger med stigende koncentration, hvilket gør dem egnede som en sammenligningsskala. For at minimere forskelle i den subjektive vurdering af stoffets farve bør cylindrene i en serie have samme egenskaber – højde, diameter og glastykkelse.

Rings and markings are in durable white ceramic enamel which correspond with specific volumes of liquid. Graduated ring scale of any of the tubes within a set will not vary from that of any other tube within the set by more than 1,5 mm.
