Bromocresol purple (BCP) is an organic dye and a pH indicator. It changes from yellow (pH 5.2) to purple (6.8). BCP reacts with ammonia to yield ammonium salt. Hence, it can be used as an ammonia sensing probe.

Cells with proper cell membrane are not stained, while damaged cells are seen as blue-grey ghosts.
