Inden for elektronmikroskopi foretrækker mange fosfatbuffere, dels på grund af deres manglende toksicitet sammenlignet med den næstmest anvendte buffer, natriumkakodylat. Fosfatbuffere anvendes bedst ved fysiologisk pH eller i en let alkalisk formulering.
