Plasma er i bund og grund det samme som serum, men udvindes ved at centrifugere blodet uden at det koagulerer. Plasma udvindes ved centrifugering, før koagulering finder sted, og centrifugeringen pakker de tættere blodlegemer og blodplader ned i bunden af centrifugerøret, så det flydende plasma hviler ovenpå, hvilket gør ekstraktionen af plasmaet enklere.
