Kompetente celler er celler som har fået modificeret/manipuleret deres cellevæg således at det er lettere at indføre fremmed DNA ind i cellerne. Celler bliver kompetente ved en process, som benytter kalcium klorid og varmechok, og kompetente celler vokser meget hurtigere og bliver gjort kompetente for hurtigere vækst end celler i andre stadier.
