Potassium bromide, Uvasol® for IR spectrophotometry, Supelco®
Supplier: Merck
Potassium bromide is transparent from the near UV to long wave IR wavelengths. In IR-spectroscopy, solid samples which are difficult to melt or dissolve in any suitable IR-transmitting solvent, are analysed by grinding with potassium bromide powder, and pressing into a disc. This procedure has a high quality demand of the used potassium bromide. Potassium bromide Uvasol® is adjusted to a mean particle size of 150 μm. This is sufficient for the preparation of perfectly good pellets without the need for further pre-treatment and the associated risk of contamination. It also retains its powdery form over a period of years if stored in an airtight condition. Its physical suitability for pelletising is checked by a special application test and its chemical purity established by full spectrum FT-IR analysis.

Haematoxylin monohydrate, Certistain® for microscopy, Sigma-Aldrich®
Supplier: Merck
Hematoxylin-Monohydrat (C.I. 75290) Certistain® is a dye for the specific staining of DNA in the nuclei. It is used in cytology and histology. Nuclei are stained blue, dark violet to black. Hematoxylins are mixed with trivalent positively charged metal salts and build up the so-called hematoxylin lakes, used for the selective staining of nuclei (DNA). Certistain® is the quality group for seleceted high quality dyes that fulfill all quality requirements for IVD and CE registration.

Anaerobic incubation system, Anaerocult®
Supplier: Merck
Anaerocult® system is a reliable and established system for the cultivation of obligate and facultative anaerobes. The Anaerocult® system is based on sachets made of highly absorptive and highly gas permeable paper. The sachets, of different sizes, are filled with an oxygen-binding reagent mixture which also produces carbon dioxide. Water is added to start the reaction, which consists of the oxidation of finely divided iron and release of CO₂. The reaction proceeds without a catalyst. Incubation is possible in an anaerobic jar or in bags.

Liquid-liquid extraction, EXtrelut® NT
Supplier: Merck
EXtrelut® NT is a specially processed, inert, wide pore kieselguhr with a high pore volume. It has been used for quite some time within research, for the sample preparation of urine, whole blood, plasma and other biological matrices. Other applications include environmental and residue testing such as analysis of industrial, domestic and wastewater. EXtrelut® NT is supplied either pre-packed in cartridges or as a loose sorbent. EXtrelut® NT simplifies liquid-liquid extraction by replacing separation funnels. Using a single step is more efficient, saves solvent, as well as material and time, in contrast to classic funnel separation. The aqueous sample is simply applied to the EXtrelut® NT sorbent. It distributes itself over the chemically-inert matrix so acting as a stationary phase. Subsequently, elution takes place using organic solvents that are non miscible with water. All the lipophilic substances are extracted from the aqueous into the organic phase.
