Kovac's indole reagent for microbiology
Supplier: PanReac AppliChem
A reagent for the detection of indole-positive and indole-negative microorganisms. Some microorganisms can cleave tryptophan which is especially abundant in trypticalle digested peptone to give pyruvic acid, ammonia and indole. Indole then reacts with 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde to form a dark red dye. As tryptophan also gives a colour reaction with 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde, it must be separated from the indole. This is achieved by selectively extracting indole with butanol.

S@feMate TOTAL Microbiological Safety Cabinets, Class II
Supplier: BioAir S.p.A.
S@femate TOTAL Cabinets have been designed according to the airflow specifications for NSF49 Class II Type B2 cabinets, also known as 'total exhaust'. 100% fresh air is taken in from the lab, either from the front aperture and from a main inlet. The air from the main inlet is then cleaned by the main HEPA H14 filter to provide an ISO5 working area and joins with the air from the front aperture on the bottom of the cabinet. All the air is then circulated behind the backwall of the unit and filtered via the exhaust HEPA H14 filter and reinjected into the environment.

Dehydrated culture media
Supplier: Merck
Dehydrated media are used for a wide variety of applications. To minimise the risks associated with powdered culture media, the majority of Merck's dehydrated culture media is produced in granular form. Merck uses ingredients of non animal origin to minimise the potential risk of transmissible spongiform encephalitis (TSE). When there is no alternative, only ingredients which are recommended by EDQM, and belonging to TSE category B or C are used. This ensures that the product is of the highest quality and in compliance with the standards for food control, microbiological testing on finished products and starting materials, and quality control in the pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industries. Custom-made media can be prepared to meet individual customer specifications. The formulation is kept confidential via a Non Disclosure Agreement. Please enquire for further details. Anaerobic incubation system, Anaerocult®
Supplier: Merck
Anaerocult® system is a reliable and established system for the cultivation of obligate and facultative anaerobes. The Anaerocult® system is based on sachets made of highly absorptive and highly gas permeable paper. The sachets, of different sizes, are filled with an oxygen-binding reagent mixture which also produces carbon dioxide. Water is added to start the reaction, which consists of the oxidation of finely divided iron and release of CO₂. The reaction proceeds without a catalyst. Incubation is possible in an anaerobic jar or in bags.

Experimentation kits, bacterial conjugation
Supplier: G-Biosciences
Bacterial conjugation is a naturally occurring process that allows the transfer of DNA from one bacterium to another, which allows the transfer of genetic traits, particularly drug resistance. The kit contains two bacteria with different drug resistance genes and all the tools for students to study bacterial conjugation. This kit teaches the difference between bacterial genomic DNA and the transferable plasmid DNA and the mechanisms of bacterial conjugation. Students will also learn important basic microbiological techniques, including bacterial growth in liquid broth and on solid agar plates, antibiotic selection of bacteria and important aseptic techniques.
