Serratia species are implicated in nosocomial infections. In several countries, Serratia marcescens is frequently associated with epidemics in intensive care units and in particular in neonatal and pediatric units. Surveillance of nosocomial infections requires effective recovery of clinical isolates from faeces, wound exudates and respiratory samples to prevent problems of cross infection and potentially fatal infections. In this context, CHROMagar™ has developed CHROMagar™ Serratia, a culture medium perfectly suited to the search for S. marcescens in faeces. In addition, S. marcescens is able to survive days to months on surfaces, distilled water and hand soap, making it an important pathogen in nosocomial infections and sporadic epidemics.

Dihydrorhodamine 123 is the reduced form of rhodamine 123, which is a commonly used fluorescent mitochondrial dye. It is non-fluorescent, but it readily enters most of the cells and is oxidized by oxidative species or by cellular redox systems to the fluorescent rhodamine 123 that accumulates in mitochondrial membranes. It is useful for detecting reactive oxygen species including superoxide (in the presence of peroxidase or cytochrome c) and peroxynitrite. Dihydrorhodamine 123 dihydrochloride is functionally equivalent to dihydrorhodamine 123 but with increased stability toward air oxidation and light during storage. Dihydroethidium (also called hydroethidium) is the chemically reduced form of the commonly used DNA dye ethidium bromide. The probe is useful to detect oxidative activities in viable cells, including respiratory burst in phagocytes. Dihydroethidium itself has blue fluorescence (355/420 nm) in cells, while the oxidized form ethidium has red fluorescence (518/605 nm) upon DNA intercalation. H2DCFDA (2′,7′-Dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate) is a useful fluorogenic reagent to detect reactive oxygen intermediates in cells. On oxidation, H2DCFDA becomes the highly green fluorescent 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescein, 504/529 nm (end product).

Food safe kits provide a simple, reliable, and rapid procedure for detecting the presence of an animal species in meat and meat products. The assay is based on 5’ nuclease Real-Time PCR reactions to amplify a unique genomic sequence in the target organism. According to European Commission Directive 2002/86/EC, food ingredients have to be declared. In the case of meat and meat products, the animal species has to be disclosed on the label. Moreover, the species autenticity can be highly relevant to consumers for economic, medical, cultural and religious reasons. Fraudulent substitution of cheaper meats in place of more expensive species, the inclusion of meat in non meat (vegetarian) products and the presence of allergens in food products are clear examples for the importance of this issue (Ballin, 2010; Dooley et al., 2004). Several methods are based on identification of proteins by means of electrophoretic and/or immunological methods. However, these methods are not reliable for application in highly processed and heated products due to the protein deterioration. DNA is more stable than proteins during processing and although it can be fragmented by several processes, modern DNA methodologies like PCR-based techniques still allow the identification of DNA from the different species present in a sample (Lockley & Bardsley, 2000). Real-Time PCR techniques are especially suitable for these products because small fragments of DNA can still be amplified and identified with high sensitivity and specificity (Dooley et al., 2004).
