Avantor’s Reading, UK site earns My Green Lab Silver Certification

Congratulations to (L-R) Priya Sasikumar, Kelly Richards, Kelly-Anne Hopkins, and Georgia Rooney-Anderson for their hard work over the last two year to achieve this status.

Two years ago, a dedicated group of scientists at Avantor’s Reading, UK site identified a golden opportunity to enhance their operations by embracing sustainability.  The team set out on a mission to reduce the lab's environmental impact.

Their journey began with small, manageable tasks. As their passion for green practices grew, so did their ambitions. Recognizing the need for a structured approach, the team decided to pursue My Green Lab Certification. They conducted a baseline assessment, which provided a roadmap of actionable strategies to reduce their ecological footprint while maintaining the critical work being conducted in the lab.

Over the next year, the team implemented a series of impactful actions. One such action was a change in standard operating procedures resulting in a 15% reduction in solvent waste. Additional improvements included upgrading to energy-efficient fume hoods, installing motion-sensor and timer lights in less frequently used areas, introducing silica vials, and improving labels and signage to minimize waste. To foster a culture of sustainability, the team established a communications campaign that educates and engages colleagues in their initiatives through posters and emails.

These collective efforts paid off, earning them the coveted Silver Certification. The team is thrilled to join a community of scientists and laboratories recognized by My Green Lab for their commitment to sustainability.
