Build better (U)HPLC methods, starting with the fundamentals.
Reliable separations begin with a solid understanding of liquid chromatography (LC) principles. This Back-to-Basics session will help you connect theory to practice, so you can design methods that deliver consistent, high-performing results.
Join Matt James, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist at Avantor®, as he explores the science behind LC performance and shares practical ways to strengthen your workflow efficiency.
What you’ll learn:
- The anatomy of LC particles, columns and instrumentation
- The basics of analyte retention
- How to improve separation efficiency using the van Deemter equation
- How to influence analyte resolution
- Why stationary phase selectivity matters for reproducibility
Gain actionable insights to optimize your methods and achieve greater consistency across your LC workflows.

Matt James is a Senior Research Scientist at Avantor®. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Bristol, where he focused on the analysis of archaeological samples, and also worked in the pharmaceutical industry. Over the last decade, he has been part of the Technical Support, Applications and R&D teams at Hichrom, part of Avantor. His recent work has focused on HPLC/UHPLC method transfer and translation, the use of solid-core phases, the development of next-generation LC stationary phases, and LC method development for key applications such as the analysis of nitrosamines by LC-MS/MS and PFAS. Matt has co-authored seven peer-reviewed articles and presented his work at several conferences.
