Pufry pro elektroforézu udržují během separace DNA, RNA a dalších proteinů stabilní pH. Poskytují ionty přenášející elektrický proud, přičemž jejich nízký náboj umožňuje molekulám různých velikostí pohybovat se rozdílnou rychlostí pro analytické účely. Přípravné látky navíc chrání proteiny před degradací, čímž zajišťují životaschopnost vzorku a přesnost testování.
