This gene encodes a member of the junctional adhesion molecule (JAM) family. The encoded protein contains multiple glycosylation sites at the N-terminal region, and multiple phosphorylation sites and glutamic acid/proline (EP) repeats at the C-terminal region. The gene is expressed in normal stomach and testis, as well as in gastric, esophageal and ovarian cancers. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.

The IP Receptor binds prostacyclin, PGI2, the main pro-stanoid synthesized by vascular tissues.Upon binding to the IP Receptor, prostacyclin activates adenylate cyclase primarily through the Gas protein. The gene encoding the human IP Receptor is located on chromosome 19. It is expressed as a glycosylated and phosphorylated protein, which is abundantly expressed in vascular tissues such as aorta, lung, atrium and ventricle, as well as in kidney, thymus, spleen and neurons.

EGP40 is a 40-43 kDa transmembrane epithelial glycoprotein, also identified as epithelial specific antigen (ESA), or epithelial cellular adhesion molecule (Ep-CAM). It is expressed on baso-lateral cell surface in most simple epithelia and a vast majority of carcinomas. This antibody has been used to distinguish adenocarcinoma from pleural mesothelioma and hepatocellular carcinoma. This antibody is also useful in distinguishing serous carcinomas of the ovary from mesothelioma.
