Dextran 40, Powder, USP is used as an antithrombotic in order to reduce blood viscosity. It is a complex branched glucan that is synthethised by certain lactic acid bacteria from sucrose. Commonly used in microsurgery to decrease the risk of vascular thrombosis, these agents are also used as effective osmotic agents and can treat hypovolemia. In the laboratory, Dextran is used to apply osmotic pressure to biological molecules and can, when applied with a fluorescent molecule, be used to create concentration gradients of diffusible molecules. Spectrum Chemical USP products are manufactured, packaged and stored under current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) per 21CFR part 211 in FDA registered and inspected facilities.
