Serratia species are implicated in nosocomial infections. In several countries, Serratia marcescens is frequently associated with epidemics in intensive care units and in particular in neonatal and pediatric units. Surveillance of nosocomial infections requires effective recovery of clinical isolates from faeces, wound exudates and respiratory samples to prevent problems of cross infection and potentially fatal infections. In this context, CHROMagar™ has developed CHROMagar™ Serratia, a culture medium perfectly suited to the search for S. marcescens in faeces. In addition, S. marcescens is able to survive days to months on surfaces, distilled water and hand soap, making it an important pathogen in nosocomial infections and sporadic epidemics.

Sucrose is used as a source of energy readily available for bacteria in fermentation tests (i.e. Klebsiella pneumoniae ferments sucrose whilst Salmonella typhimurium gives a negative reaction). It free from other sugars and from starch, proteins and metals. Sucrose can be used as an ingredient of dehydrated culture media and need dissolution in distilled or deionised water and sterilisation by autoclaving.

La maggior parte dei soggetti con infezione da Salmonella sviluppa diarrea, febbre e crampi addominali 12 - 72 ore dopo l'infezione. La malattia solitamente dura 4 - 7 giorni e la maggior parte dei pazienti guarisce senza trattamento. Tuttavia, in alcuni casi la diarrea può essere così grave da richiedere l'ospedalizzazione. Salmonella è un genere di bacilli Gram negativi asporigeni, prevalentemente mobili, appartenente alla famiglia delle Enterobacteriaceae. Salmonella spp. è una delle cause più comuni di intossicazione alimentare a livello mondiale ed è stata isolata nella maggior parte dei casi da cibi crudi (come carni, uova e prodotti vegetali). L'alta resistenza all'essiccazione combinata con un'altissima resistenza al calore dopo l'essiccazione fa della Salmonella un potenziale problema nella maggior parte degli alimenti, in particolare per i prodotti secchi e semisecchi. La legislazione alimentare in molti paesi include limiti sulla Salmonella, in genere la sua assenza in 25 g di campioni alimentari. I metodi microbiologici tradizionali per il rilevamento della Salmonella in cibi e mangimi animali richiedono in totale fino a 5 giorni per ottenere un semplice risultato positivo/negativo. Test rapidi innovativi facilitano lo screening degli organismi patogeni. Il formato a passaggio singolo riduce la possibilità di errori durante la manipolazione.
