Una valvola di sicurezza è la protezione primaria per il personale e le apparecchiature coinvolte in sistemi in pressione statici e dinamici. La valvola di sicurezza viene utilizzata per controllare o limitare la pressione in un sistema o recipiente che può aumentare a causa di anomalie di processo, guasti strumentali o di apparecchiature, o incendi. La valvola è progettata o tarata per aprirsi a una pressione preimpostata al fine di proteggere i recipienti a pressione e altre apparecchiature da pressioni che superano i limiti di progetto.
