I sistemi anaerobici, facili da usare, consentono di ottenere popolazioni elevate creando rapidamente ambienti di crescita ottimali per i microrganismi. I barattoli e le bustine hanno guarnizioni a tenuta di gas che impediscono l’ingresso di ossigeno libero aggiuntivo che potrebbe influenzare la coltivazione del campione. Dopo il riempimento con terreno di coltura ed eventualmente agenti riducenti l’ossigeno presente nell’atmosfera interna, i sistemi anaerobici trasparenti facilitano l’osservazione visiva della crescita degli anaerobi alla base, dove l’ossigeno non può penetrare.

Il sistema Anaerocult® si basa su bustine realizzate in carta altamente assorbente e altamente permeabile ai gas. Le bustine, di diverse dimensioni, sono riempite con una miscela di reagenti leganti l'ossigeno che produce anche anidride carbonica. L'acqua viene aggiunta per avviare la reazione, che consiste nell'ossidazione del ferro finemente suddiviso e nel rilascio di CO₂. La reazione procede senza catalizzatore. L'incubazione è possibile in un barattolo anaerobico o in sacchetti.

Atmospheric conditions can be developed inside the jar in less than one minute, with the flexibility to choose the level of oxygen depletion.
