I tamponi biologici sono inerti e hanno effetti a breve termine sul sistema oggetto di indagine, entrambi vantaggi significativi rispetto alle sostanze inorganiche e agli acidi organici deboli utilizzati in passato. La maggior parte dei tamponi biologici in uso oggi sono tamponi a base di taurina o glicina N-sostituite, che soddisfano la maggior parte dei requisiti che i tamponi biologici devono rispettare. I sistemi tampone vengono generalmente utilizzati negli esperimenti per consentire un confronto diretto dei risultati.
