Gli enzimi accelerano, o catalizzano, le reazioni chimiche, e si sa che catalizzano più di 5.000 tipi di reazioni biochimiche. La maggior parte degli enzimi sono proteine, sebbene alcuni siano molecole di RNA catalitico.
