Le cellule competenti sono quelle le cui pareti cellulari sono state modificate per facilitare l’incorporazione di DNA estraneo al loro interno. Le cellule vengono rese competenti attraverso un processo che utilizza cloruro di calcio e shock termico, e le cellule in fase di crescita molto rapida diventano competenti più facilmente rispetto a quelle in altre fasi di crescita.
