Protein purification reagents are for use in isolating one or more proteins from a complex mixture, usually cells, tissues, or whole organisms. This process is vital for function and structure characterization, as well as identifying interactions of the protein of interest. Important during the many steps, the protein purification reagents assist with cell lysis, separating the soluble protein components from cell debris, and finally separating the protein of interest from product- and process-related impurities.

Jacalin binds to human IgA1 (also called serum or secretory IgA) with high specificity (i.e., it does not bind IgG or IgM). Thus, Jacalin that has been immobilised on crosslinked beaded agarose is useful for purifying human IgA from serum or colostrum samples.
