Les solutions tampons d'ajustement de la force ionique totale (TISAB) augmentent la force ionique d'une solution à un niveau relativement élevé. Ceci est important pour les mesures potentiométriques, notamment avec les électrodes sélectives aux ions, car ces dernières mesurent l'activité de l'analyte plutôt que sa concentration. Les TISAB sont très fréquemment utilisées pour l'analyse des ions fluorure, par exemple avec les électrodes sélectives aux ions fluorure.
