THPS steht für Tetra Hydroxymethylphosphoniumsulfat. Es gilt gemeinhin als umweltfreundliches Biozid, das leicht abbaubar ist und eine geringe Flüchtigkeit aufweist. Als Breitbandbiozid ist es wirksam gegen die häufigsten Bakterienarten, die Probleme in Kühlwasser verursachen, insbesondere sulfatreduzierende Bakterien (SRB). THPS wird auch zur Bekämpfung von Legionellen eingesetzt. Es hemmt das Wachstum von Algen, Bakterien, Hefen und Pilzen in einer Vielzahl von industriellen Anwendungen.
