Die Tabletten werden in 100 ml der zu testenden Wasserprobe gelöst, die mit 1 ml Ammoniak-/Ammoniumchlorid-Pufferlösung auf einen pH-Wert von 10 gepuffert wurde, und dann mit EDTA-Lösung (0,01 M) titriert, bis die Probe von rot nach blau umschlägt.
Gesamthärte in mg/l = 10×ml verwendetes Titriermittel.

Kontrollproben von  Zur Kalibrierung der Methode sollte Calciumcarbonat verwendet werden.
