PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and are colloquially known as ‘forever chemicals’. They are a group of man-made chemicals that have been widely used in various industrial and consumer products since the 1940’s. PFAS are known for their strong chemical bonds, which make them resistant to heat, water, and oil. This property has made them popular for use in a wide range of applications, including firefighting foams, non-stick cookware (such as PTFE), waterproof fabrics, food packaging, and many other household and industrial products.

Essentially PFAS are highly persistent and are therefore also known as perpetual chemicals. They are toxic and harmful to health. More than 1000 chemicals belong to this group of substances.

Many everyday objects contain these problematic substances, which enter the human body either directly or via the environment. Food can also be a source. Almost all people now have PFAS in their blood. The fluorine compounds are hardly degradable and therefore remain in the environment and sometimes in the body for a long time. According to a study, the chemicals can lead to an increased risk of cancer.

An initial proposal for a ban on the chemicals has been on the table since February 2023.  A decision by the European Commission is not expected until 2025 at the earliest.

It is essential during the PFAS sample process to provide vials and caps that is PFAS free.
