Inerte Färbeplatten helfen beim Nachweis von Mineralien, indem sie das Erscheinen charakteristischer Farben begünstigen. Werden Proben über eine Strichtafel gekratzt, bestimmt die auf der unglasierten Oberfläche zurückbleibende Farbe die Substanz. Bei Tüpfelplatten werden flüssige Indikatoren in die näpfchenartigen Vertiefungen mit der Probe gegeben, woraufhin das weiße oder durchsichtige Material den sich ergebenden Farbton deutlich erkennen lässt. Reaktions-Färbeplatten sind auch in schwarz erhältlich, um die Bildung weißer Ausfällungen leicht sichtbar zu machen.
