Aus reiner Zellulose gefertigt, die mit Salz- und Flusssäure behandelt wurde, dienen Filterpapiere dem Filtern mit guter Rückhaltefähigkeit und Durchflussrate. Diese Zellulosefilter bilden eine semipermeable Barriere senkrecht zum Flüssigkeits- oder Luftstrom, um feine Substanzen aus Flüssigkeiten oder Luft zu trennen. Es sind verschiedene Qualitäten von Filterpapier erhältlich, um unterschiedliche Laboranwendungen durchzuführen – von grober bis feiner Partikelfiltration bei routinemäßigen Laborarbeiten.
