Nessler-Röhren werden zum Vergleich von Farbe und Trübung zwischen Lösungen verwendet. Sie sind in hoher oder niedriger Ausführung erhältlich und werden häufig zur Herstellung einer Reihe von Kalibrierlösungen mit steigender Konzentration eingesetzt, sodass sie als Vergleichsskala dienen können. Um Unterschiede in der subjektiven Farbwahrnehmung der zu analysierenden Substanz zu minimieren, sollten die Zylinder einer Serie die gleichen Eigenschaften aufweisen – Höhe, Durchmesser und Glasstärke.
