Kugeln können eingesetzt werden, um die Verfahrensdauer zu verkürzen, Proteine durch Affinitätsbindung zu isolieren oder Utensilien zu reinigen. Spezielle Kugeln für Wasserbäder leiten Wärme sicherer als Wasser und umgehen gefährliche Spritzer oder Verdunstung, wodurch empfindliche Glaswaren möglicherweise zerbrechen würden. Mikroträger-Partikel für Zellkulturen ermöglichen die Expansion der Zellen und kontrollieren die Synthese. Die Kügelchen werden mit verschiedenen Durchmessern und aus verschiedenen Materialien hergestellt, um die individuellen Anforderungen der jeweiligen Verfahren abzudecken. Aufgrund des im Vergleich zu alternativen Lösungen geringeren Wartungsaufwands verringern die Kugeln insgesamt die Präparationszeit.
