Dimethylsulfoxid
Dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO, (CH₃)₂SO) is a polar aprotic solvent known for its exceptional ability to dissolve both polar and nonpolar compounds, high boiling point (189 °C), and low toxicity relative to similar solvents. It is widely used in organic synthesis, cryopreservation of cells, pharmaceutical formulation, and as a solvent in spectroscopic and electrochemical studies. DMSO readily penetrates biological membranes, requiring cautious handling, as it can carry dissolved substances directly into the bloodstream.
