Dimethylsulfoxid
Dimethylsulfoxid (DMSO, (CH₃)₂SO) ist ein polares aprotisches Lösungsmittel, das für seine außergewöhnliche Fähigkeit bekannt ist, sowohl polare als auch unpolare Verbindungen zu lösen, seinen hohen Siedepunkt (189 °C) und seine im Vergleich zu ähnlichen Lösungsmitteln geringe Toxizität. Es wird weit verbreitet in der organischen Synthese, der Kryokonservierung von Zellen, in pharmazeutischen Formulierungen sowie als Lösungsmittel in spektroskopischen und elektrochemischen Studien eingesetzt. DMSO dringt leicht in biologische Membranen ein und erfordert vorsichtigen Umgang, da es gelöste Stoffe direkt in den Blutkreislauf transportieren kann.
