Bei der molekularen Klonierung sind Vektoren DNA-Moleküle, die zur künstlichen Übertragung von fremdem Genmaterial in eine andere Zelle eingesetzt werden. Die vier wichtigsten Arten von Vektoren sind Plasmide, virale Vektoren, Cosmide und künstliche Chromosomen, wobei die Plasmide am häufigsten verwendet werden. Vektoren können zur Klonierung eingesetzt werden, und einige Vektoren sind speziell auf diesen Verwendungszweck zugeschnitten, während andere für die Transkription und Proteinexpression vorgesehen sind. Einfachere Transkriptionsvektoren werden zur Amplifikation des eingefügten genetischen Materials verwendet.
