Laminin is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 900 kDa found in the basement membrane of most tissues. It is composed of three chains: α1, β1, and γ1. It binds to collagen type IV and heparan sulfate, playing a crucial role in the structure and function of the basement membrane.

In cell culture, it primarily mediates adhesion between epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and hepatocytes, and also promotes axonal outgrowth in neurons, as well as differentiation and chemotaxis.

It is closely associated with cancer metastasis, and highly metastatic cancer cells are known to express a high number of laminin receptors on their cell surfaces.
