A Great Exploration Activity into Many Chemistry Topics
- Students are able to design their own experiments, try them out and make observations
- A great exploration activity into many chemistry topics
Add two dry powders and an indicator solution to the reaction bag and observe what happens. The bag cools down and the solution changes colors, then it heats up and produces a gas. Ask students what chemical reactions are occurring in this simple, yet dynamic reaction. Then, explore with them what combinations of reactants result in each of the observations. The activity can also be used to introduce writing chemical reactions and using heat as a reactant or a product. This demonstration is a natural opening to a guided inquiry activity and a great introduction to chemical reactions and chemical equations. Contains enough materials to repeat the demonstration about 20 times, or 60 smaller student-led reactions.
