Detergents are a class of molecules whose unique properties enable manipulation (disruption or formation) of hydrophobichydrophilic interactions among molecules in biological samples. In biological research, detergents are used to lyse cells (release soluble proteins), solubilize membrane proteins and lipids, control protein crystallization and prevent non specific binding in affinity purification and immunoassay procedures. They are often used as an additive in protein gel electrophoresis. These detergents are useful as a component of cell lysis buffers or other solutions intended to extract and solubilize proteins, improve chromatography, prepare yeast spheroplasts, and reduce background in ELISA or Western blot methods.
