The ready-to-use fixative is a mixture of alcohol and polyethylene glycol that is suited for upper respiratory tract cytology, particularly sputum. The fluid permits storage of specimens for weeks and prevents air drying artifacts from appearing in the samples. It can also serve as a good general cytology fixative.
