OXSR1 is a serine/threonine kinase which regulates downstream kinases in response to environmental stress such as osmotic stresses, notably sorbitol and, to a lesser extent, NaCl. OXSR1 phosphorylated thr84 within the N-terminal regulatory domain of PAK1. Replacement of thr84 with gln reduced activation of PAK1 by an active form of the small G protein CDC42, suggesting that phosphorylation by OXSR1 modulates the G protein sensitivity of PAK. OXSR1 interacts with chloride channel proteins SLC12A6 isoform 2, SLC12A1 and SLC12A2 but not with SLC12A4 and SLC12A7, possibly establishing sensor/signaling modules that initiate the cellular response to environmental stress. Binds to and phosphorylates RELL1, RELL2 AND RELT. OXSR1 may have a role in regulating the actin cytoskeleton.

The CUB and sushi domain-containing proteins, CSMD1-3, are membrane proteins that are involved in cell-cell adhesion and are weakly expressed in most tissues, with higher levels of expression observed in the cerebellum and hippocampus. CSMD1 is part of the complement system that defends against pathogens through either the classical pathway or the alternative pathway. Located primarily in nerve growth cones, CSMD1 blocks the classical pathway of the immune system and is thought to be involved in tumor suppression, as defects in the gene encoding CSMD1 are associated with squamous cell carcinomas. CSMD2 and CSMD3 are located primarily in the brain and are implicated in some forms of head and neck cancer. Additionally, the CSMD3 gene is a candidate for induction of epileptic seizures.

Ankyrins are membrane adaptor molecules that play important roles in coupling integral membrane proteins to the spectrin-based cytoskeleton network. Mutations of ankyrin genes lead to severe genetic diseases, such as fatal cardiac arrhythmias and hereditary spherocytosis. ANKRD50 (ankyrin repeat domain 50) is a 1,429 amino acid phosphoprotein that contains nineteen ANK repeats. Conserved in chimpanzee, dog, cow, mouse, rat, chicken, zebrafish, fruit fly and mosquito, ANKRD50 is encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 4q28.1. Chromosome 4 represents approximately 6% of the human genome and contains nearly 900 genes. Notably, the Huntingtin gene, which encodes an expanded glutamine tract in cases of Huntington's disease, is located on chromosome 4. FGFR-3 is also encoded by a gene that maps to human chromosome 4 and has been associated with thanatophoric dwarfism, achondroplasia, Muenke syndrome and bladder cancer. Chromosome 4 is also linked to Ellis-van Creveld syndrome, methylmalonic acidemia and polycystic kidney disease.

This antibody recognizes a protein of 40 kDa, identified as CD7, a member of the immunoglobulin gene superfamily. Its N-terminal amino acids 1-107 are highly homologous to Ig kappa-L chains whereas the carboxyl-terminal region of the extracellular domain is proline-rich and has been postulated to form a stalk from which the Ig domain projects. CD7 is expressed on the majority of immature and mature T-lymphocytes, and T cell leukemia. It is also found on natural killer cells, a small subpopulation of normal B cells and on malignant B cells. Cross-linking surface CD7 positively modulates T cell and NK cell activity as measured by calcium fluxes, expression of adhesion molecules, cytokine secretion and proliferation. CD7 associates directly with phosphoinositol 3'-kinase. CD7 ligation induces production of D-3 phosphoinositides and tyrosine phosphorylation.

The genus Salmonella is a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. The genus is composed of Gram-negative bacilli that are facultative and flagellated (motile). Salmonellae possess 3 major antigens; the "H" or flagellar antigen (phase 1 & 2), the "O" or somatic antigen (part of the LPS moiety) and the "Vi" or capsular antigen (referred to as "K" in other Enterobacteriaceae). Salmonellae also possess the LPS endotoxin characteristic of Gram-negative bacteria. This LPS is composed of an "O" polysaccharide ("O" antigen) an "R" core and the endotoxic inner "Lipid A". Endotoxins evoke fever and can activate complement, kinin and clotting factors. Until recently the most common cause of food poisoning by Salmonella species was due to S. Typhimurium. As its name suggests, it causes a typhoid-like disease in mice. In humans S. Typhimurium does not cause as severe disease as S. Typhi, and is not normally fatal. The disease is characterized by diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting and nausea, and generally lasts up to 7 days.
