Battery Cathode and Anode Production

When the battery is discharging, the anode releases lithium ions to the cathode (flowing through the electrolyte) as well as electrons (flowing through the electrical circuit), the latter generating an electrical current. When the battery is plugged in to recharge, the opposite happens, i.e. lithium ions are released by the cathode and received by the anode.

Independently of the electrode type, they are typically composed of a metal foil coated with a compound made of a polymer binder, a conductive additive and an active material.

  • The cathode is a thin aluminum foil coated with a compound. Cathode active materials are composed of lithium and metal. The most used polymer binder is polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) that dissolve in toxic and flammable solvents such as n-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) and n,n-dimethylformamide (DMF)
  • The anode is typically a thin copper foil coated with a compound. Anode active material is graphite (synthetically-produced or mined). A commonly used polymer binder for the anode is carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) that dissolves in deionized water (DI Water)
  • Super P Carbon Black (CB) is widely used as conductive additive in cathodes and anodes
