Kankercellen op kweek groeien ongecontroleerd omdat zij deze eigenschap niet meer hebben. Hierdoor kunnen er tumoren worden gevormd in het lichaam. Ook kunnen er vele verschillende celtypen aanwezig zijn in één enkele tumor. Met dit experiment kunnen leerlingen de verschillen in groei en celtype tussen normale cellen en kankercellen zien.

De groene fluorescente proteïne (GFP) van de kwal Aequorea victoria wordt op grote schaal toegepast in alle gebieden van de wetenschap. Vele organismen zijn getransformeerd met het GFP-gen, het gen dat verantwoordelijk is voor de bioluminescentie van kwallen. Het gen is dermate nuttig gebleken dat wetenschappers het hebben gemuteerd naar een vorm die blauwe fluorescente proteïne (BFP) produceert. In dit eenvoudige experiment transformeren leerlingen bacteriën met behulp van GFP, BFP of beiden.

When bacteria are used to make medicinally useful proteins by transformation, the protein of interest must be separated from all of the other cellular proteins. In this experiment, the unique fluorescent properties of GFP and BFP are used as an assay during their purification from an E. coli extract. The column fractions containing GFP or BFP are identified by fluorescence and then purified. As an optional activity, purified protein fractions can be separated by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) to estimate the purity and size of the GFP and BFP proteins.
