Permeabiliteit wordt geregeld door de combinatie van poriegrootte en filterlengte, zodat aerosolen de pipetschacht niet kunnen bereiken. De filters hebben een consistente betrouwbare werking. Als er echter per ongeluk vloeistoffen in contact komen met het filter, passeren deze zeer langzaam. Omdat het filter niet uitzet, kan het monster worden teruggewonnen uit het filter door een simpele activering van de uitblaasfunctie van de pipet of door centrifugering, indien nodig.
