De test detecteert antimicrobiële residuen zoals antibiotica, sulfonamiden en andere chemotherapeutische producten in vlees en andere voedingsmiddelen van dierlijke oorsprong. Het betreft een kwalitatieve routineprocedure. De test is gebaseerd op agardiffusie, en maakt gebruik van sporen van Geobacillus stearothermophilus als testorganisme. Antibiotische residuen en sulfonamide-residuen belemmeren de groei van het testorganisme. Reinigingsmiddelen, desinfectanten en bewaarmedia zijn niet van invloed op de test.
