Løsningene er designet for å løses opp i et polart løsemiddel og spre seg jevnt gjennom løsemiddelet for å produsere en elektrisk ledende løsning. De fleste løselige salter, syrer og baser regnes som elektrolytter. Bakgrunnselektrolytter er også essensielle for optimal kapillærsonemigrasjon, mens lagringsløsninger sikrer at utstyr fungerer når det trengs.
