Elektroforesebuffers handhaven consistente pH-niveaus tijdens de scheiding van DNA, RNA en andere eiwitten. Door ionen te leveren die de aangelegde stroom overbrengen, maken de laag geladen oplossingen het mogelijk dat moleculen van verschillende grootte zich met verschillende snelheden verplaatsen voor analyse.
