Baden worden routinematig gebruikt in microbiologische laboratoria en creëren specifieke omstandigheden om monsters te incuberen die niet aan een open vlam mogen worden blootgesteld. Zowel analoge als digitale bedieningselementen stellen de constante temperatuur in, evenals de roer- of schudmechanismen. Meestal wordt water gebruikt om de monsters voorzichtig te verwarmen, en olie en kralen worden ook gebruikt wanneer hogere temperaturen of efficiëntere methoden vereist zijn. De baden kunnen worden geleverd met deksels om te voorkomen dat warmte ontsnapt en besmetting van buitenaf plaatsvindt.
