Onze microscopen zijn nuttige instrumenten om objecten te bekijken die te klein zijn voor het blote oog, of in situaties waarin meer detail nodig is voor monsteranalyse en -evaluatie. Sommige varianten schijnen extra licht direct door het monster om beelden scherp te laten uitkomen, terwijl andere gebruikmaken van gereflecteerd licht om oppervlaktedetails te benadrukken in monsters die te dik of te ondoorzichtig zijn voor conventionele achtergrondverlichting.
