De ondergrond van Chromocult ® Cronobacter sakazakii-agar zorgt voor een goede groei en sterke kleurvorming van Cronobacter sakazakii-kolonies. Toevoeging van inhibitoren en een incubatietemperatuur van 44 °C zorgen voor aanzienlijk minder groei van de meeste andere gram-positieve en gram-negatieve bacteriën. Cronobacter sakazakii is ß-D-glucosidase-positief en groeit op dit medium als blauw-groene kolonies. Incubatie: 24 ±2 uur bij 44 ±1 °C. De incubatietemperatuur heeft grote invloed op de gevoeligheid en selectiviteit van deze methode. Temperaturen hoger dan 45 °C inhiberen de groei van Cronobacter sakazakii. Temperaturen lager dan 43 °C reduceren de inhibitie van andere bacteriën.

Chromogene media bieden een methode voor snelle identificatie van karakteristieke bacteriële enzymen.
