Swabs voor monstername hebben doorgaans koppen van polyester breiweefsel, dat zorgt voor minimale deeltjesafgifte en maximale monsterterugwinning. Na licht bevochtigen kunnen de flexibele applicators restmateriaal opnemen van oppervlakken van elke vorm voordat het monster wordt geëlueerd voor analyse. De verzamelapparaten met één of twee uiteinden vormen een minder destructieve methode dan bulksampling. Vooraf gereinigd en direct klaar voor gebruik zorgen de wegwerp-swabs ervoor dat tests ongecontamineerd blijven.
