Chemicaliën voor gebruik in microscopie worden geleverd als kant-en-klare buffers die handig verpakt zijn en vers worden bereid voor elke bestelling. Voorbereide microscopiebuffers zijn economisch en tijdbesparend. In elektronenmicroscopie hebben veel onderzoekers een voorkeur voor fosfaatbuffers, deels vanwege het ontbreken van toxiciteit in vergelijking met de op een na meest gebruikte buffer, natriumcacodylaat. Fosfaatbuffers worden het best gebruikt bij fysiologische pH of in een licht alkalische formulering.
