Elektroforesebuffers behouden een consistent pH-niveau tijdens de scheiding van DNA, RNA en andere eiwitten. Door ionen te leveren die de aangelegde stroom geleiden, zorgen de oplossingen met lage lading ervoor dat moleculen van verschillende grootte met verschillende snelheden bewegen voor analyse. Voor extra bescherming voorkomen de preparatieve stoffen afbraak van eiwitten, wat zorgt voor betrouwbare monsters en nauwkeurige testresultaten. Verkrijgbaar in diverse molecuulgewichten kan de beste buffer gekozen worden op basis van de betreffende macromoleculen.
