According to the World Health Organisation, between 2 and 3 million cases of skin cancer occur globally every year. Many of these cases are caused by preventable damage to DNA by UV light. In this experiment, students expose plasmid DNA to shortwave UV light to simulate the effect of sunbathing. The DNA is then analysed by agarose gel electrophoresis to observe the damage.

Kankercellen verschillen van normale cellen in de combinaties van proteïnen die aanwezig zijn op het oppervlak. Antilichamen tegen deze proteïnen binden zich specifiek aan kankercellen en niet aan normale cellen. Hierdoor kan kanker in een vroeg stadium worden ontdekt, en wordt een mogelijke methode gecreëerd voor het toedienen van kankertherapieën. Oil spills cause devastation to the environment, killing sea life, birds, and coastal plants. Spraying areas of contamination with oil-eating microbes accelerates the degradation of the oil. This process is known as bioremediation. In this open-ended experiment, students grow a mixture of oil-eating bacteria and observe their effectiveness at degrading a variety of oils.

Wanneer normale cellen op kweek worden gezet, stoppen ze met groeien wanneer er geen ruimte meer is (contactinhibitie). Kankercellen op kweek groeien ongecontroleerd omdat zij deze eigenschap niet meer hebben. Hierdoor kunnen er tumoren worden gevormd in het lichaam. Ook kunnen er vele verschillende celtypen aanwezig zijn in één enkele tumor. Met dit experiment kunnen leerlingen de verschillen in groei en celtype tussen normale cellen en kankercellen zien.

De groene fluorescente proteïne (GFP) van de kwal Aequorea victoria wordt op grote schaal toegepast in alle gebieden van de wetenschap. Vele organismen zijn getransformeerd met het GFP-gen, het gen dat verantwoordelijk is voor de bioluminescentie van kwallen. Het gen is dermate nuttig gebleken dat wetenschappers het hebben gemuteerd naar een vorm die blauwe fluorescente proteïne (BFP) produceert.
