Les kits de test permettent de détecter la présence de micro-organismes dans les milieux de culture. Dans l’industrie alimentaire, ces tests servent à isoler et identifier des organismes indicateurs ou des pathogènes d’origine alimentaire. Les fournitures vérifient efficacement l’irradiation des aliments en utilisant des méthodes de microbiologie alimentaire reconnues comme référence et permettent le test sur site d’échantillons d’eau pour détecter E. coli ou d’autres souches dangereuses. Les laboratoires de microbiologie recherchent un moyen simple de conserver les microorganismes importants plutôt qu'une sous-culture répétitive, qui entraîne des cultures contaminées, une perte de viabilité et, plus important, la perte des caractéristiques d'origine due à l'introduction de modifications biochimiques et génétiques. Cryoinstant se compose de 25 billes poreuses dans un flacon rempli d'un bouillon contenant du glycérol. Les microorganismes se collent sur la surface poreuse des billes. L'excès de bouillon est aspiré, les flacons peuvent ensuite être stockés jusqu'à –70 °C dans un congélateur.
